Kuwait City: The number of smokers in the country has been increasing at an alarming rate, especially among the youths and women, says Assistant Undersecretary for Public Health Dr Qais Al- Duwairi. Al-Duwairi made the statement in line with the Health Ministry’s announcement that the anti-smoking aspect of the Environmental Law will be implemented soon.

Kuwait: A senior official on Monday called for executing an effective plan to prevent smoking which kills millions each year and affects countries' resources. Kuwait is following the regional and international efforts to fight smoking, Assistant Undersecretary for technical affairs at the Ministry of Health and chairman of the national committee for the prevention of smoking, Qais Al-Duweri, said in his opening speech at a workshop on protocols to prevent illegal tobacco distribution, held at the Sheraton Hotel on Monday.

Kuwait: Seventeen percent of students in Kuwait are smokers, according to the most recent Ministry of Health statistics. The recent figures also show that the smoking rate among the population’s male domain reached 24.5 percent, while it reached one percent among females. As to shisha (hookah) smoking, its spread is estimated at 2.2 percent among men and 0.2 among women, the statistics show. Meanwhile, Faisal Ali Al-Mutawaa, Chairman of the Kuwait Heart Foundation (KHF), warned that shisha smoking is increasing among the youth, and added that this practice is one of the main causes of cardiac diseases. He also warned that shisha, particularly those used at public cafes, turn into disease transmitters.
